I am a very sceptical person and always thought people who buy expensive copper and magnetic bracelets were gullible and easy targets for slick salesmen. About three years ago I started getting joint pain in my ankles which I figured was the result of 30 years of running marathons, ultra marathons, fun runs, triathlons and all the pavement pounding hours of training that went into these events. My ankles were sore while I ran and when I woke up each morning. I thought I would just have to grin and bear the pain and eventually when it got too much I would stop running and focus on swimming and cycling.
A good friend who happens to be an intelligent, logical, and very practical engineer said I should try a copper/magnetic bracelet like the one he had been wearing for many years. I put aside my bias and invested in a bracelet (it was $149 which seemed very over-priced for a piece of copper with two magnets!) After a week I could feel the pain was fading and three years later I am running with ease again.
I read extensively to find out why such a simple device cured my pain and found most articles on the topic were sceptical. A 2004 study published in the prestigious British Medical Journal tested 194 men and women with osteoarthritis and the conclusion was that “pain decreases when wearing magnetic bracelets but it is uncertain whether this response is due to specific or non-specific (placebo) effects.”
